Barnesville, GA

Barnesville is a city in Lamar County in Georgia that was once called as the “Buggy Capital of the South” as it produced about 9,000 buggies a year in the 20th century.

A buggy is a light, two-person carriage famous in the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries that is drawn either by one or two horses.

To give recognition to this nickname, Barnesville annually hold the Buggy Days celebration every third week of September.

This year, Buggy Days will be held on September 15 to 17.

The festival celebrates Barnesville’s heritage as the Buggy Capital of the South. It has been named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast for five years.

Buggy Days feature handcrafted items by more than 150 artists and craftspersons who sell their goods on Main Street, a beauty pageant, concert, street dance and parade.

But the highlights of the three-day event are the display of buggies at the Old Jail Museum and outdoors near the Main Street and the parade that features buggies, floats and horses.

The concert and street dance will be held at the Ritz Park Amphitheater on Sept. 15 at 6:00pm. The street dance kicks off the festival weekend. Check this website for more details of the Buggy Days

On Sept. 16, the city will hold the Buggython 5K, 10K and 1 Mile run at Summers Field starting at 8:00am.

Now on its 40th year, the Buggython is one of the oldest 10K races in the state of Georgia. Click this link for more details
